Event Empowers Young Women in STEM and Energy Sectors

Houma, LA – October 29, 2024 – The South Central Industrial Association (SCIA) and Fletcher Technical Community College proudly hosted the “Females Fueling Our Workforce” event on October 23-24, 2024, at the BP Houma Operations Learning Center in Schriever. Over 500 female sophomore students from 10 area public and private high schools in Terrebonne and Lafourche paraded through the two-day event, engaging with industry leaders and exploring future career opportunities.

This year’s event featured 25 dynamic female speakers from prominent organizations including BP, Chevron, SLB, Shell, Bollinger, John Deere, the U.S. Coast Guard, FORCE Industries, and LUMCON. These industry representatives shared their personal stories of their own career path, as well as insights into the diverse opportunities available for women in the STEM and energy sectors, aiming to inspire these students that anything is possible when it comes to their career choice.

“Females Fueling Our Workforce serves multiple vital purposes,” said SCIA Executive Director, Hillary Charpentier “First and foremost, we want to inform our young ladies about the extensive career opportunities available in STEM and energy. We are also committed to changing the perception that these industries are male-dominated. Most importantly, we aim to empower young women to overcome barriers and pursue their goals, whether in energy, STEM, or any field they choose.”

Generously sponsored by BP and Capital One, the event provided a platform for interactive sessions, networking opportunities, and mentorship, encouraging students to connect with role models who have navigated similar paths in their careers of interest.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing newfound inspiration and determination to explore careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
